where did August go? who stole it?
i was away from home 10 days this month. that’s a lot. needless to say, it’s been hard to keep up with everything.
the CSA share has been the usual August fare: cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, zucchini, sweet corn, watermelon, cantaloupe, peppers, and beans. i’ve been freezing a lot of extras, because we can’t get through our entire stash in a week. i try, but even i can only eat zucchini so many nights in a row.
of note:
a yellow doll watermelon. yellow! it tasted just like a “regular” pink watermelon. in other words: delicious. (raise your hand if you like to take a slab of watermelon, salt it down, and devour it. yum.)
i made pickled cucumbers. i didn’t want to go through the hassle of getting a big canning setup, but found directions for fridge pickles. they don’t last as long and they have to be stored in the fridge, but they’re easy. i made two jars, and waited two weeks to taste them. my notes look like my chemistry notebook in high school – date, time, ingredients, measurements, combinations, tasting notes.
the first batch was just dill. they were OK.
the second batch was dill and a few cloves of garlic. I’M SORRY, I CAN’T HEAR YOU, I’M TOO BUSY EATING THESE TO CARE ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE.
the third batch was sweet pickles. YUM. next time, more sugar.
i’m still waiting to open my super dill batch.
i’m ready now for tomato season. spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce, stewed tomatoes, crushed tomatoes – frozen. that should last me a couple months.
